Skeleton decor that works all year, not just at Halloween
How to use skeleton and skull decor in an everyday home or office, from funny desk skeletons to moody shelf pieces, and why memento mori objects have been on desks for centuries.

On this page
Skulls on a desk are not a new idea. Scholars and painters kept them for centuries as memento mori, a reminder that time is short and worth using well. Modern skeleton decor keeps the reminder and adds a sense of humour.
The trick to using it all year is to choose pieces that are funny or thoughtful rather than spooky.
Skeletons doing ordinary things
The funniest skeleton decor shows skeletons in everyday situations. It reads as a joke, not a haunting:
- Office Skeleton Ledge Sitter: hunched over a laptop, deadline looming. It comes in laptop, coffee mug, hard hat and lab coat versions.
- Hammering to the Bone Skeleton: a hard-hat skeleton worker taking a break with his hammer.
- Ledge Skull Welder Edge Sitter: a skeleton welder sitting on a shelf edge with its legs over the drop.
Skeletons that make you think
The Thinker Skeleton Desk Pet borrows Rodin's pose, chin on hand. It is the most memento-mori piece we make, and it suits a study or a reading corner as much as a desk.
Where skeleton decor looks best
- On a monitor or desk edge, where the joke is about work. See ledge sitters for monitors.
- On a bookshelf, at the end of a row, next to a small plant. Green and bone-grey look good together. More in our bookshelf decor guide.
- In a group of three, all at different heights: a sitter on the edge, a thinker on a stack of books and a small piece in front.
Choosing a colour
Grey and off-white look like real bone and suit wooden shelves. Matte black makes skeletons graphic and modern, especially against a white wall. For a Halloween display you can go further: glow in the dark is an option on single-colour pieces.
Keeping it tasteful
- One or two skeleton pieces per room is plenty. More starts to look like a theme.
- Mix them with plants, books and ordinary objects so they stay a detail.
- In an office, choose the work-joke pieces over anything dark.
Frequently asked questions
Is skeleton decor only for Halloween?
No. Funny or thoughtful skeleton pieces, like a skeleton at a laptop or in the thinker pose, work all year. Keep the spookier pieces for October.
What does a skull on a desk mean?
Historically it was a memento mori, a reminder of mortality meant to encourage using time well. Today it is mostly decorative, with a bit of that meaning left in.
What colour should skeleton decor be?
Grey or off-white looks most like bone and suits wooden furniture. Matte black looks modern against light walls.
