How to prepare an STL so it prints first time
The five file problems that cause most failed prints, how to spot them before you order, and how to fix each one with free software.
Most print failures are decided before the printer starts. They are baked into the file.
Here are the five problems we see most often, how to catch them yourself, and how to fix them without buying anything.
1. The mesh is not watertight
This is the big one. A solid object needs a closed surface — every edge shared by exactly two faces. If there are holes, the slicer cannot tell inside from outside and produces something unpredictable.
How to spot it: our quote tool flags it automatically. It measures solid volume from your mesh, and if the result is implausible against the bounding box, it tells you the figure is an estimate. That warning is almost always a non-manifold mesh.
How to fix it:
- Blender (free) — enable the 3D Print Toolbox add-on, then Check All and
Make Manifold.
- Microsoft 3D Builder (free, Windows) — open the file and it offers to
repair automatically. Crude, but effective for simple parts.
- Meshmixer (free) — Analysis → Inspector → Auto Repair All.
2. Wrong scale
STL files carry no units. A model authored in inches arrives 25.4× too small, and it happens constantly with downloaded models.
How to spot it: check the bounding box before ordering. Our quote page shows the dimensions in millimetres as soon as you drop the file in. If your 100 mm bracket reads 3.9 mm, that is the inch problem.
How to fix it: scale by 25.4. The scale slider on the quote page does it non-destructively, so you can correct it without touching the file.
3. Inverted normals
Faces pointing inward instead of outward. The mesh looks fine on screen and slices into nonsense.
How to spot it: in Blender, turn on Face Orientation overlay — blue is correct, red is inverted.
How to fix it: Blender, select all in Edit Mode, then Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside (Shift+N).
4. Walls too thin to print
A wall thinner than the nozzle cannot be printed. Our nozzle is 0.4 mm, so anything under about 0.8 mm (two perimeters) is fragile, and under 0.4 mm simply vanishes.
How to spot it: Blender's 3D Print Toolbox has a Thickness check. Or look for detail you know is fine — embossed text under 1 mm tall rarely survives.
How to fix it: thicken the wall to 1.2 mm or more. For text, 0.6 mm of relief and 4 mm character height is a reliable floor.
5. Absurd triangle counts
A 200 MB STL of a simple bracket helps nobody. It is slow to upload, slow to slice, and the extra triangles are below the printer's resolution anyway.
How to spot it: file size. Over about 50 MB for a single part is a red flag.
How to fix it: Blender's Decimate modifier at ratio 0.3–0.5 usually loses nothing visible. Export from CAD at a sensible tessellation rather than maximum.
A checklist before you order
- [ ] Bounding box reads the size you expect, in millimetres
- [ ] No watertight warning on the quote page
- [ ] Thinnest wall is at least 0.8 mm
- [ ] Text is at least 4 mm tall with 0.6 mm relief
- [ ] File is under 50 MB
- [ ] The part fits in 180 × 180 × 180 mm, or you have asked us about splitting it

A rule of thumb: on any of these, a model with photographs of actual prints from several people is far safer than one with only renders.
