Where to find 3D models worth printing

You do not need to model your own parts to get value out of a printer. Most of what people print comes from somewhere else — and knowing where to look, and what to avoid, saves a lot of wasted filament.

The repositories worth using

Printables

[printables.com](https://www.printables.com) — the best signal-to-noise ratio of any free repository. Prusa runs it, the community actually prints things and posts photographs, and the contest structure pushes quality up. Start here.

MakerWorld

[makerworld.com](https://makerworld.com) — Bambu Lab's platform. Models often ship with tuned print profiles, which matters if you are printing on a Bambu machine yourself. Growing quickly, and the quality is high.

Thingiverse

[thingiverse.com](https://www.thingiverse.com) — the oldest and largest. The archive is genuinely irreplaceable, but quality varies enormously and plenty of uploads were never printed by their author. Read comments and look at "makes" before committing.

Thangs

[thangs.com](https://thangs.com) — strong search, including geometric search that finds models similar to one you already have. Aggregates other sites too.

GrabCAD

[grabcad.com](https://grabcad.com) — engineering-oriented, mostly STEP and native CAD rather than meshes. If you need a real component to design around — a motor, a bearing, a connector — this is where it lives.

Cults3D and MyMiniFactory

[cults3d.com](https://cults3d.com) and [myminifactory.com](https://www.myminifactory.com) — heavier on paid models and miniatures. MyMiniFactory verifies that models actually print, which is worth something.

How to judge a model before printing it

Look for photographs, not renders. A render tells you the model looks good in CAD. A photograph tells you someone printed it and it worked.

Read the makes and comments. People report warping, missing supports and scale problems there. Five successful makes is a strong signal.

Check the file size against the complexity. A 90 MB STL of a simple bracket means an over-tessellated export — it will still print, but it is a hint the author was careless.

Check the dimensions. Models authored in inches are common, and a bounding box of 3.9 mm where you expected 100 mm is the giveaway.

Prefer parts over assemblies unless the author explicitly designed the clearances for printing. Assemblies modelled for injection moulding rarely have the tolerances an FDM part needs.

Licences, briefly

Most free models carry a Creative Commons licence, and the differences matter if you plan to sell anything you print.

• CC BY — use commercially, credit the author.
• CC BY-SA — same, but derivatives must carry the same licence.
• CC BY-NC — non-commercial only. You cannot sell prints of it. This is

the one people breach most often, usually without realising.

• CC BY-ND — no derivatives. Print it, do not modify it.

If you are ordering a print from us for resale, check the licence first. We ask about it on commercial-quantity orders, and we will decline work that clearly breaches one.

When to model it yourself

If you cannot find it, or what you find needs so much modification that you are rebuilding it anyway, model it. [Onshape](https://www.onshape.com) is free for hobbyists and runs in a browser; [FreeCAD](https://www.freecad.org) is free and offline; [Fusion 360](https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360) has a personal tier. For organic shapes, [Blender](https://www.blender.org) is free and extraordinary.
